Satun Geopark Today

History and landscape The link between Satun Geopark and the people

It has been more than 100 years ago that people benefitted from the natural resources of this area’s topography.

Sino-Portuguese style building Thung Wa District

“Su-ngai Upe” or Kab Mak Canal is a channel that large ships use to sail through to distribute goods throughout Thung Wa District.

Nowadays, it has become a bustling commercial port as well as a melting pot of various cultures, be it European, Islamic, Chinese, or Thai. Many architectures and traditions such as the Phee Bo ghost appeasing ceremony and Sino-Portuguese style buildings can be seen here.

Tarutao Island’s

Tarutao Island’s natural features made it the perfect penitentiary from 1936-1946. The government selected Tarutao Island as a site for the vocational training and detention of prisoners convicted of severe offences. It was called the “natural prison” due to its limestone cliffs surrounded by deep waters, making it virtually impossible for prisoners to escape.

Tarutao Island was also the place where the original copy of the country’s first Thai-English dictionary was produced by So Sethaputra, Thailand’s first geologist who was at the moment imprisoned on the island because on charge of a political offence.
